Morton’s Neuroma Doesn’t End the Race for Notable Participant

Courtesy PhotoLaura Caradonna-Dubiel finished within a seven-minute range over the course of five Boston Marathons. In her first marathon she finished at 4:47:08, in 2010 she came in at 4:41:48, her best time, and in 2014 she came in right in the middle at 4:44:39. Considering Dubiel was on a two year hiatus, her fear was quite impressive.

"I didn’t run the last two years, as I had Morton’s neuroma. That is nerve damage between toes. It causes your toes to go numb, and it can be extremely painful if you try to run on it," said the Foster Road resident. Caradonna-Dubiel stated that she bought orthotic inserts and was administered cortisone shots several weeks prior to the marathon.

Morton’s neuroma is painful. If you have foot or ankle discomfort, see podiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Conforti of New Jersey. Dr. Confortiwill treat your podiatric needs.

Morton’s Neuroma

Also called Intermetatarsal Neuroma or Plantar Neuroma is a condition that affects the nerves of the feet, which targets the toe between the third and fourth toe. Neuroma is a growth that can occur in various areas of the body. Morton’s Neuroma causes the nerves around the feet to become enlarged causing pain in the feet.

Morton’s Neuroma can be caused by injury or pressure, many times no visible signs will indicate that you may have this. Instead, a tingling sensation along with pain will be present.  If this condition is left untreated, pain is likely to continue and worsen.

Foot pain should be treated immediately. Paying close attention to your feet, will less likely mean that you will have to undergo surgery.

How Does It Occur?

-          Wearing ill-fitting shoes
-          High impact exercise
-          Sustaining injuries
-          Walking incorrectly (bunions, flat-feet)
